Thousands of Yaz Lawsuits Filed; Settlements Reached.
Bayer Healthcare, the maker of Yaz, was named in thousands of lawsuits alleging severe complications caused by the popular birth control pill. It has settled 8,250 of those cases for $1.7 billion. Other cases are pending in state and federal courts nationwide.
Claims against the drug maker include negligence, strict product liability, breach of express and implied warranties, fraudulent and negligent misrepresentation, fraudulent concealment, medical monitoring, and fraud and deceit. Plaintiffs claim Yaz was marketed and advertised in a way that exaggerated benefits, such as acne reduction, and downplayed serious dangers associated with the drug.
Thousands of injuries and about 100 deaths are linked to Yaz through these severe side effects. According to a study published in the British Medical Journal in October 2011, YAZ users experienced twice as much blood clot risk as women who used older contraceptives.
Thousands of Yasmin, BeYaz and Ocella Lawsuits are Also Pending
Birth control pills similar to Yaz, including Yasmin, BeYaz and Ocella, are at issue in more than 10,000 lawsuits against drug makers.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Adverse Events reporting system indicated serious side effects such as heart arrhythmias, electrolyte imbalance, hyponatremia, hyperkalemia, stroke, gallbladder problems, blood clots, embolisms and sudden death following the use of Yaz, Yasmin, BeYaz and Ocella in some cases. The lawsuits seek compensation and accountability from Bayer for the damage caused by the medication.
