NEWS: Johnson & Johnson has agreed to pay over $2.2 billion in fines to settle allegations that the company marketed Risperdal to people with development disabilities, children and older adults – individuals for whom the medication was not intended.
What is Risperdal?
Risperdal falls into a class of medications known as atypical antipsychotics. These medications are used to treat symptoms of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia in adolescents and adults as well as autism in children and young adolescents. Risperdal was approved in 1994 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and quickly grossed billions of dollars for its manufacturers before generic versions became available. This particular medication may cause tardive dyskinesia, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, diabetes and strokes in older patients taking the medication for mental illness as a result of dementia. Other severe side effects may include fever, bruising, persistent erection, seizures, increased or irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, fainting and dizziness.
Risperdal & Gynecomastia
Studies and adverse event reports submitted to the FDA suggest that gynecomastia, or the growth of breasts in males, is a potential side effect of the medication. Gynecomastia may cause lasting psycho-social harm and can be painful and embarrassing. If you have developed gynecomastia, consider filing a Risperdal lawsuit to seek compensation for lost wages, pain and suffering and medical expenses to cover the cost of treatments and procedures such as liposuction or mastectomy.
In recent years, several Risperdal lawsuits have been filed and lawsuits have been reached. A Risperdal lawsuit settlement was reached in November 2013 between the U.S. Department of Justice and the manufacturers to settle claims that the companies illegally marketed Risperdal and other drugs to patients for whom the medication was not intended.
