The popular diabetes drug Actos has been linked to severe side effects, including bladder and other cancers. As a result, thousands of lawsuits have been filed against drug makers Eli Lilly & Co. and Takeda Pharmaceuticals, claiming that the companies marketed Actos despite having knowledge of the risk of cancer for its users. Juries have awarded millions of dollars to Actos users.

Actos Linked to Bladder Cancer

Actos side effects have been documented in multiple studies, leading some countries to ban its use. Significant developments regarding Actos include:

  • Diabetics who took Actos were 22% more likely to develop bladder cancer compared to patients taking other diabetes drugs, according to a 2011 French study.
  • According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, individuals who take Actos for longer than one year are 40% more likely to develop bladder cancer.
  • Germany and France banned Actos due to its dangers in 2011; India followed suit in June 2013.
  • A 2012 study, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, examined the records of more than 2.6 million individuals and concluded that Actos patients were 22% more likely to be diagnosed with bladder cancer.
  • A 2014 study, published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, found a “clinically significant” higher occurrence of bladder cancer in Actos patients. Researchers reported that Actos should be prescribed for shorter periods of time to protect patients.

More Than 3,000 Actos Lawsuits Filed

Drug makers are facing more than 3,000 lawsuits filed on behalf of plaintiffs who have suffered while taking Actos. The lawsuits seek compensation and accountability from Takeda for the damage caused by the medication.
