In December 2020, over 50 lawsuits in 31 districts involving ParaGard IUDs were consolidated into an MDL in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. According to plaintiffs in the litigation, defendants Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc., Teva Women’s Health, Inc., The Cooper Companies, Inc., and CooperSurgical Inc. allegedly failed to warn women about serious risks linked to the medical devices.
Plaintiffs further claim that those serious risks allegedly linked to ParaGard IUDs may cause the device to break and require additional surgeries. The ParaGard IUD is a small, T-shaped IUD used to prevent pregnancy for up to ten years. Unlike other IUDs that use the hormone progestin to prevent pregnancy, the ParaGard IUD is a non-hormonal IUD that releases copper to prevent fertilization.
